Asbestos Courses                

You can turn to Mystic Air Quality Consultants as a certified asbestos training provider for initial and refresher courses for all 5 EPA MAP disciplines (worker, supervisor, designer, management planner, and inspector) as well as for the O&M training required by OSHA and EPA and Asbestos Abatement Project Monitor accreditation.
These courses that are explained below are presented at various intervals throughout the calendar year.
Additionally, you can provide 2 hour asbestos awareness courses to your employees, and to appropriate contract workers employed by others to work in your buildings, with Mystic Air trainers coming right to your site.
Operations and Maintenance training programs can also be conducted over two days at your building or here at Mystic Air for those plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and others who disturb asbestos; or whose work takes them into asbestos regulated areas. 
State standards and certification and licensing programs are different from federal requirements and the type of training required will depend on the work to be done and the site. • Asbestos Building Inspector
  The purpose of this course is to equip and certify the participant to conduct inspections for suspect asbestos materials, to collect samples, and to assess the condition of the material based on EPA protocols and to satisfy OSHA related employee exposure criteria. (State Licensing criteria after coursework: college associate's or bachelor's degree in pertinent field, 6 months previous related experience or 2 months of supervised field experience).
  Initial Training 3 days
  Refresher Training 1/2 day annually
• Asbestos Management Planner
  The purpose of this course is to provide graduates of the Building Inspector course with the knowledge and practical experience to create EPA required management plans for schools, and EPA recommended plans for general industry and public buildings. The EPA's "Green Book" for building owners recommends this training for the person to be named the asbestos program manager. (State Licensing criteria after coursework: college bachelor's degree in pertinent field, 6 months previous related experience or 3 months of supervised field experience).
  Initial Training 2 days
  Refresher Training 1/2 day annually
• Asbestos Project Designer
  The purpose of this course is to prepare the participant to interpret the data from building inspections for suspect asbestos materials, to understand laboratory analysis of samples, to be knowledgeable about building systems and all applicable asbestos-related regulations, in order to develop a design for an asbestos abatement project and/or create Alternative Work Practices and associated State-required AWP applications. (State Licensing criteria after coursework: college bachelor's degree in pertinent field, 1 year previous asbestos abatement related experience or 6 months of supervised field experience).
  Initial Training 3 days
  Refresher Training 1 day annually
• Asbestos Worker
  The purpose of this course is to equip and certify the participant to conduct an asbestos abatement procedure safely and according to all prevailing federal and state standards. This includes required hands-on training segments for containment construction, erection of decontamination chambers, glove bag operations, use and care of respirators, recognition of tools, familiarity with equipment including HEPA vacuums and air sampling devices.
  Initial Training 4 days
  Refresher Training 1 day annually
• Asbestos Site Supervisor
  The purpose of this course is to prepare the participant to interpret the data from asbestos abatement specifications and project designs, to be knowledgeable about building systems and all applicable asbestos-related regulations, in order to supervise and direct an asbestos abatement project. In addition to all hands-on training presented in the worker course (see above), supervisors do extensive review of pertinent regulations, management checklists, and supervisory documentation paperwork responsibilities.
  Initial Training 5 days

• Asbestos Project Monitor Training
  The purpose of this course is to prepare individuals to be familiar with the needs and requirements of safe work practices for asbestos abatement in order to be able to conduct the required safety and health oversight duties including, but not limited to, verification of regulatory compliance for:  abatement specialists' training , certification, medical surveillance, and respirator fit testing; containment construction and maintenance of integrity; work practices and adherence to contract specifications; visual inspections of abatement containments and adjacent area monitoring prior to, during and after the abatement work; air testing for employee exposure for consistency with exposure assessments and adjacent area air monitoring at multi-employer job sites and assessment of containment integrity.   (State Licensing criteria after coursework: college associates or bachelor's degree in pertinent field, 1 year previous asbestos abatement - especially in monitoring - related experience or 6 months of supervised field experience).

Lead Courses                                                              

You can depend upon Mystic Air Quality Consultants as your certified lead training provider in the State of Connecticut for initial training as a lead abatement supervisor or as a lead inspector/risk assessor (combined) and for refresher training for supervisor, inspector, inspector/risk assessor, and project planner.  (Call to discuss your special training requirements for States other than Connecticut).  

Additionally courses sanctioned by HUD and the State of Connecticut for remodelers and renovators are generally presented monthly.  

OSHA required training for lead in construction and for work on steel structures are also available on request for presentation at our training center or (when suitable) at your site.

These courses that are explained below are presented at various intervals throughout the calender year. State standards and certification and licensing programs are different from one State to another and from federal requirements.  

The State of Connecticut also has educational, experiential and State-administered testing requirements that applicants for State certifications must meet.  (Go to calendar.html  final pages about "Prerequisites").

INITIAL & REFRESHER LEAD COURSES

TAUGHT BY MYSTIC AIR

• Lead Abatement Supervisor
  The purpose of this training is to prepare the participant to interpret the data from lead abatement specifications and project plans, to know about building systems and all applicable lead regulations, in order to supervise and direct a lead abatement project. Hands-on training includes: methods of removal (wet scrape, mechanical methods, chemical removal); setting up worker decontamination stations; workplace preparation; personal protective equipment; and exposure monitoring. Supervisors also do extensive review of pertinent regulations, management checklists, and supervisory documentation paperwork responsibilities.
  Initial Training 5 days
  Refresher training 1 day annually

• Lead Inspector
  The purpose of this training is to equip and certify the participant to conduct inspections for lead paint, both by using XRF analyzers and by collecting paint, dust, water and soil samples; to assess the condition of the paint and substrate and to recognize encapsulation requirements and post-abatement reoccupancy criteria.  
  Initial Training 3days

• ADDITIONAL REFRESHER COURSES TAUGHT BY MYSTIC AIR  
• Lead Abatement Project Planner
  The purpose of this course is to refresh the participant in interpreting the data from building inspections and risk assessments, as well as in encapsulant suitability tests; to renew understanding of laboratory analysis of samples; to be mindful of building systems and all applicable lead-related regulations, in order to develop a plan for a lead abatement project and a procedure and protocol for site specific management plans.
  Refresher Training 1 day annually
• Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor
• This refresher training course reviews the inspection protocols for lead in paint, soil, dust and water based on Connecticut State regulations; using XRF or material sampling collection.  Participants refresh their activities involving assessment of conditions of paint in place, conditions of substrates, and recognition of encapsulation requirement compliance for certain building surfaces.  The day incorporates an annual update on changes in State and Federal standards and practices relative to tasks of inspectors, including: testing protocols, analytical requirements for post-abatement reoccupancy certification for lead in dust on floors, window sills, window wells, etc.  In addition participants review their risk assessor tasks of evaluating the risks posed by defective paint on substrates or as found in dust, water, soil or water sample analysis results; as well as addressing the issues related to establishing "interim controls" prior to abatement or management plan development and implementation.

Steel Structures

Additionally, you can have Mystic Air provide the appropriate amount of training for your employees involved in lead abatement from steel structures (such as bridges, tanks, fire escapes, etc) and to appropriate contract workers employed by others to work at your sites (welders, painters, drillers, grinders, etc).

Lead in Construction   (29 CFR 1926.62 - OSHA Training)

Working around lead painted surfaces on non-residential construction sites requires employees to have a minimum of 4 hours of OSHA compliance training, and an additional amount of time appropriate for the requisite work-specific type of respirator training.  

Mystic Air Quality instructors specialize in presenting this program here in Groton or (where suitable) at your training site. In many cases if there is a suitable program presentation forum at the site where the work is going to be performed, many of our pleased clients have mobilized the space for this course.  The immediacy of on-site training adds to the practicality and impact of the lessons for personal safety, hygiene and proper work practices around lead.

Lead Safe Work Practices for Remodelers and Renovators

In mid 2001 the State of Connecticut and H.U.D. instituted a course developed by the State University for employees engaged in remodeling and renovation activities in residential structures meeting the criteria for governmental funding for construction, renovation, or for rental assistance payments.

Mystic Air Quality Consultants, Inc. is a select training provider for this program, to which we add an hour of OSHA requirements to round out an 8 hour program.  This course is suggested for carpenters, painters, electricians, remodelers, siding contractors, window replacement contractors, roofers, tin knockers, sheetrockers, dry wall installers, plumbers, maintenance staff, and property owners.

After completion of this course, participants will:

understand the sources of the lead problem

know the health effects of lead exposure for both children and adults

be familiar with federal and state standards concerning lead-based paint

understand how improper renovation, remodeling and maintenance techniques can create lead hazards

know the principles of working smart, working wet, and working clean

know which practices are prohibited by law

know the proper techniques to avoid creating lead hazards, including:

•        how to plan a lead-safe job
•        how to set up a lead-safe job
•        how to implement lead-safe work practices
•        how to clean up safely
•        how to dispose of waste safely and in compliance with state and federal regulations

This HUD/CT course for Lead Safe work practices does not take the place of lead abatement courses - which still require 40 hour supervisor trained personnel and 32 hour worker trained personnel.    This course is designed to make sure craft persons in remodeling, renovation, and maintenance roles do not inadvertently create a lead hazard to themselves or building occupants.                                         8 hour program ...........  $  99.00 each person

Hazardous Materials Courses

HazCom and Hazwoper training at various levels of readiness and for emergency response are yours at our training center or taught site-specifically at your facility.
Included are 5 day Hazwoper training, with a Supervisor 6th day available as well. Also take advantage of shorter programs of 3 days for Hazardous Materials Handler training, which is also presented at our training facility or customized for your site.
You can also participate at your site in a 3 day Hazardous Waste Training course for TSDFs (treatment, storage, and disposal facilities). In addition, Mystic Air can provide DOT type Hazardous Materials Training for your employees involved in transporting, handling, shipping or receiving hazardous materials. Hazwoper First Response courses for entry level and operations are also taught for your staff members here at Mystic Air in Groton, or at your facility.

Construction Safety Training  OSHA 510 Training.    

This is a 5 day, 40 hour program taught by authorized personnel using the approved OSHA curriculum. Topics include a full range of site safety issues related to the leading causes of construction site deaths and fines / citations: falls, struck-bys, caught-in-betweens, and electrocution.
For abatement contractors to upgrade lead and asbestos abatement supervisors closer to the level of competent person and helps them recognize when a specialty (such as scaffolding) requires a competent person beyond their capabilities.
For building and general contractors to provide "Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry" training for site foremen and project managers and competent persons.
